James Edward (Edd) Syler, a beloved member of the Winchester community, passed away on January 9, 2025, at the age of 93. Born on August 26, 1931, in Belvidere, Tennessee, to Wiley Carl and Stella Isbell Syler, Edd lived a life of service, devotion, and love that left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
A Franklin County native, Edd graduated from Huntland High School in 1950 and answered the call to serve his country for four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a member of the Baptist faith.
On January 11, 1957, Edd married his soulmate, Shirley Evon Hice, with whom he shared 67 years of love and companionship. Together, they built a life centered on faith, family, and mutual devotion. As a husband, Edd’s care and commitment shone brightly, particularly in Shirley’s later years, where his loving attention both enriched and extended her life. Her passing in April 2024 marked the end of a beautiful chapter in their shared journey.
Edd’s professional life was marked by 38 years of dedicated service at AEDC, from which he retired in 1994. His retirement was filled with cherished moments spent caring for his grandchildren, enjoying coon hunting, attending Walking Horse shows, and cheering on his beloved Atlanta Braves.
Preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Shirley, and his brother Bill Syler, Edd leaves behind a legacy of love and strength. He is survived by his son, Kent (Lynell) Syler of Murfreesboro; his daughter, Lisa (Nelson) Hatchett of Winchester; and his grandchildren, Kyle (Diana) Hatchett, Liala Syler, Melissa Hatchett, Emily Syler, and great-granddaughter Elsie Ruth Hatchett and many nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home, with funeral services to follow at 2:00 pm. Interment will take place at Franklin Memorial Gardens.
