HARLEY DILLON CATES, age 87, of Winchester, Tenn. departed this life on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at STRHS Winchester. Mr. Cates was born in Moore County, Tenn., on May 20, 1937, to the late Lannie Ray Cates and Gladys Sanders Cates. He last attended The Way of the Cross Baptist Church in Winchester. He was a farmer and enjoyed raising beef cattle most of his life. He and his late wife, Mary, purchased Broadview Grocery on August 1, 1970, and were the owners and operators until they retired in January 2011. When Mr. Cates was younger, he enjoyed hunting quail and white tail deer, and he always had bird dogs. He also raised a garden every summer. Mr. Cates enjoyed Christmas and birthdays with his grandkids and will be remembered as a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother.
In addition to his parents and wife, Mary of 57 years, Mr. Cates was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Cates and sister, Dora Lee Wells.
He is survived by his children: Carol (David) Whitehead, Jeff (Kim) Cates, all of Belvidere, Brent Cates and fiancee’, April of Lynchburg and Amy (Jeff) Mason of Belvidere. Grandchildren; Nicholas LaFevers, Audra (Jeff) Caldwell, Tyler Cates, Tara Cates, Kinah Mason and 3-great-grandchildren; Caroline Caldwell and Garrett Caldwell, and Matthew Caldwell. Sister, Elloween Donnell of Smyrna, Tenn., Marlene (Jimmy) Anderson of Shelbyville, Tenn. Several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Friday, March 14, 2025, in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services, LLC with Bro. Rudy Wilkerson, officiating. Visitation with the family will be held from 12:00 Noon until service time at 2:00 on Friday.
Interment will follow in the Head of Hurricane Cemetery in Lynchburg, Tenn. with family members serving as pallbearers.
