Gary Ray Gass, age 68, passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, surrounded by family. He was born January 18, 1956, in Winchester at Franklin County Hospital. Known to all as “Hammer”, he was an avid worker and volunteer, making him an important and valuable asset to his community. For eight years, he was in the National Guard working in radio communications. He worked at Monterey Mills for five years, then worked for the City of Cowan in the street department for seven years. He cared about his community, so he became a volunteer fireman for which he volunteered for many years. He had a passion for trains and was a member of the Cowan Railroad Museum for forty-four years, making him the longest running member. He also loved being a coach, so he became a coach for Little League, and a coach for girls’ softball, which won several championships. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth Ray Gass; mother, Norma Jean Gass; sister, Keri Lynn Simmons; and stepson, Shane O’Dear. He is survived by his wife, Linda; sister, Darla (David) Goodson; children, Tiffany Overstreet, Tabitha Clark, Janet Gass, Bobby Gass; stepdaughter, Julie Riddle; niece, Rebecca (James) Hemp; nephew, Dustin (Toni) Goodson; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many friends. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 5:30-8:00pm, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at 1:00pm at St. Agnes Episcopal Church. Interment will follow at Cowan Montgomery Cemetery.
