On Saturday afternoon, in Chattanooga, at Boyd Buchanan School, the Franklin County Rebelettes took on Station Camp for the TSSAA Class AA girls' soccer state championship.
The ladies battled in the rain and sometimes heavy rain throughout the first half, ending 0-0 at halftime. Franklin County’s offense was more aggressive but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Both teams were ready to go as the sun popped out in the second half, and the game's speed picked up. At 62:19, Cali Banks, the leading scorer in the tournament, scored after an assist from Osiris Rodriguez to make it 1-0 Rebelettes. The ladies from Winchester were ready to put the game away, but at 77:36, just 2:24 before the end of the match Station Camp’s Harper Thomas scored the first tournament goal against Franklin County to tie it at one.
The match moved into overtime. In the first 10-minute overtime, at 88:35, Cali Banks scored again on a great assist from Baylor Russell. With only 1:36 remaining in the second OT Station Camp’s Emma Wood excited the Bison fans as she scored and sent the game to penalty kicks.
Rebelettes Head Coach Kent Bean sent out Baylor Russell for the first kick, and she nailed it. Keeper Callie Alonso, who played outstanding in goal all week, stopped the first Bison attempt. Next up, Osiris Rodriguez powered in a goal, and Franklin County was up 2-0. Station Camp again tried to get one past Alonso, but again, they were denied. Next up was TSSAA Finals MVP, Cali Banks, and she scored like she had done all week. The next Bison attempt would go high, and the Franklin County Rebelettes had earned the school’s first soccer state championship. The official final score was 3-2. Franklin County finished off an incredible season as they went 20-3-1 overall.
After the game, ESPN Winchester WCDT asked Coach Bean how it felt to be a State Champion.
“I’m not sure it’s really hit me yet. It just feels really awesome to see how the community showed up for us through all of this. These girls played hurt, sick, and beat up but still played with so much heart. This was such a determined group of girls. There wasn’t going to be anything that was going to stop these girls from winning tonight. I’m just so blessed to be a part of this team and family. We couldn’t have done this without assistant coaches Jake Cashion and Matthew Parkerson. Our AD, Kelly Kennedy, and the FCHS administration have been so awesome in supporting us. This was more than a team effort but a whole community effort.”
On Sunday, the school announced All-Region 4AA team members: Golie of the Year Callie Alonso, Defender of the Year Savannah Parkerson, Midfielder of the Year Baylor Russell, Forward of the Tear Gracen Baggett, and Region MVP Osiris Rodriguez.
CONGRATULATIONS LADIES FROM ESPN-WINCHESTER WCDT 1340 and 106.9!!
